Allium is the Latin word for garlic.
Perhaps the tallest of the large flowering alliums, Giganteum is a horticultural Amazon that catches the eyes of even non-gardeners. Blossoms grow up to 16cm atop lofty stems in late spring. Dramatic as a back of the border groupings, Giganteums also attract butterflies.
The magnificent, spherical blooms of Allium 'Giganteum' are up to 16cm across. Flowering in May and June, the flowers are followed by skeletal seed heads for a spectacular autumn display. Undemanding and easy to grow, these purple alliums are guaranteed to add the 'wow' factor to borders and they make excellent cut flowers.
